integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classrooms offers remarkable efficiency. Tasks that once\u00a0required\u00a0hours\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0drafting business correspondence, translating legal clauses, or composing technical reports\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0can now be completed in minutes. Students can generate multiple versions of a professional email or compare translation alternatives instantly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, this efficiency raises a critical question: What is lost when linguistic production becomes automated? This article argues that while GenAI provides valuable support for ESP instruction, uncritical adoption risks undermining the very competencies ESP aims to\u00a0develop:\u00a0context-sensitive judgment, cultural pragmatics, and ethical responsibility. In Indonesian ESP classrooms, many students lack the metalinguistic awareness to evaluate whether an AI-generated legal clause is enforceable or whether a business email appropriately reflects local politeness norms.
