APSPBI International Conference & Annual Business Meeting 2026 Successfully Concludes, Highlighting English Education in the AI Era

JAKARTA, September 12, 2026 — The Asosiasi Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris (APSPBI) or English Language Education Study Programs Association (ELESPA) successfully hosted the International Conference and Annual Business Meeting (ICON ABM) 2026 from September 10 to 11, 2026, at the Millennium Hotel Jakarta, Indonesia. Guided by the theme “Humanizing English Language Education in the Age of AI: Transformative Learning, Ethics, and Teacher Agency,” the event provided a strategic global forum to navigate the paradigm shift brought about by Artificial Intelligence in language teaching.

According to the event’s program book, the international conference recorded high participation with delegates attending from 64 campuses. To accommodate widespread participation, the conference also facilitated parallel presentation sessions through online breakout rooms for remote presenters.

The international scale of the event was underscored by the presence of distinguished keynote speakers from multiple continents. The conference featured insights from Dr. Angela Farrell from the University of Limerick (Ireland), Prof. Ahmed Bashir from Dhaka University (Bangladesh), Dr. Esther Tong from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong), Prof. Francis M. Hult from the University of Maryland (United States), and Prof. Sandra Kaneko Marques from São Paulo University (Brazil) and Dr. Noni Agustina, M.Pd from
Esa Unggul University (Indonesia).

In addition to academic exchanges, the event ran concurrently with the Annual Business Meeting, which was exclusively attended by the leadership of English Education Study Programs from 27 campuses across Indonesia. This strategic assembly successfully established frameworks for higher education institutions to integrate AI technologies responsibly, design inter-university collaboration schemes, and safeguard academic integrity alongside the professional identity of future English language educators.

The outstanding success of this event at the Millennium Hotel Jakarta was made possible through a synergistic collaboration between APSPBI and five co-hosting universities: UHAMKA, UMJ, Universitas Esa Unggul, UNTIRTA, and UKI Jakarta, along with the unwavering support of APSPBI Regional Jakarta Banten. Deep appreciation and profound gratitude are also extended to all the sponsors who supported the smooth operation and overall success of the event, specifically PT Visicom Citra Perkasa – Sanako Language Laboratory and British Council – EnglishScore.

Concluding the series of events with great pride, the baton for this prestigious conference will be gracefully passed to the eastern region of Indonesia. In September 2027, the grandeur of the APSPBI ICON ABM will return, warmly welcoming participants from the vibrant city of Makassar, South Sulawesi. In collaboration with APSPBI Regional Sulawesi Gorontalo, Universitas Muhammadiyah (Unismuh) Makassar stands ready to serve as the next host, continuing the spirit of transformation and fostering further collaboration in English language education across the nation.
